Local Disability Nonprofit Launches Young Entrepreneurs Initiative
The Arc of North Central Virginia is calling on the community to help raise $5,000 in 30 days to launch the Community of Self-Advocates (COSA) Young Entrepreneurs, a new initiative supporting young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in starting or expanding their own businesses.
The program will equip self-advocates with essential tools to succeed, including a professional business profile, a branded marketing kit, initial business supplies and more. With community support, The Arc plans to expand the program to include ongoing training on relevant business skills, one-to-one mentoring, and increased exposure to potential customers in the community.
“Imagine a community where young people with IDD are supported to turn their passions into businesses,” said The Arc of NCV Board Chair Amy Hunter. “This program will make that a reality for local young entrepreneurs.”
The first cohort of COSA Young Entrepreneurs will be featured at the Arctober Craft Fair, The Arc of NCV’s annual community-wide fundraiser, October 18 from 10:00 to 2:00 at Fauquier High School.
Donations to the campaign will go directly toward resources and support for these entrepreneurs. Contributions can be made online here.
COSA members are adults with IDD in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties. The Arc of NCV’s programming for these individuals began in 2021 with a series of regular online social and educational activities. In addition to these online programs, COSA hosts in-person events and supports initiatives like Young Entrepreneurs to give COSA members meaningful opportunities to participate in their communities.
The Arc of NCV is a local chapter of the nation’s oldest and largest organization of and for people with IDD and their families. Through education, community engagement and support, The Arc of NCV empowers people with IDD to lead full, meaningful, and active lives in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties.
